“The jack-nut in the strut tower is 6x1.0 mm, or at least it was supposed to be originally.  I purchased a new one, since mine was missing, from Rimmers for $1.01 The part number for that item is ZKC2228.  Against that jack-nut was a double spring washer.  Rimmers has it listed as part number WS600061 at a cost of .96 cents. ”

– David Elsberry

Workaround:

“The actual shoulder bolt itself is a torx head, which is why it's NLA.  You can buy allen head shoulder bolts that will fit just fine.  The actual bolt is 6mmx1.0, the shoulder is 8mm, and the head is 11mm.  It is zinc dichromate plated, and part number ZKC3726.    The link to Bolt Depot below has an adequate replacement.  It's not 100% original, which is what I wanted so I opted for used, but it should replace the old one correctly.  You want the 12mm shaft one listed on the page. http://www.boltdepot.com/Metric_shoulder_bolts_Allen_Class_12.9_steel_black_oil_finish_8mm_shoulder_%286mm_x_1.0_thread%29.aspx

Comments:   “The threaded holes in the trunk lid were already there, but I had to drill the gutter and fabricate a suitable bracket ....actually I found a suitable bracket in my "olde junke boxe" which only required elongating the holes. I also pop riveted it in place (with a smear of sealant).”

– Philip Johnstone.

1.       Note: This conversion was also detailed by Odd Hedberg, who used a bracket scavenged from an early TR7 coupe.  He also used pop rivets, but only for positioning the bracket on the gutter. Epoxy cement was used to bear the load in both the vertical and horizontal surfaces.

Comments:   “These struts were originally standard parts from Stabilus in Germany www.stabilus.de. Force was 350 Nm. They were only Marked with BL Label and Number.
Available are
         * 350 Nm Best.-Nr. 082392
         * 400 Nm Best.-Nr. 094315
In my TR7 I use the stronger one which was fitted 4 years ago and is a good replacement. I suppose Tabilus struts will be available in US as well with industrial parts suppliers as they are in Europe.”

- From Bavaria, Peter

Workaround:

See TR8CCA newsletter,  issue 49 (pg 17) for instructions by Michael Engard

While not an exact bolt in replacement, the following NAPA parts can be used.  (The ball studs replace the stock clevis pin arrangement):
2 ea. NAPA BK.819-5582 40lb gas trunk struts

       4 ea. NAPA 735-3608 10mm ball stud w/ 6mm thread
4 ea 6mm nuts and washers to fit studs

Note:

2 ea NAPA BK.819-5620 20lb gas trunk struts also fit, but maybe too weak for a boot with luggage rack etc.

Comments:

“If possible, purchase a canvas top.  The plastic ones tend to shrink and curl over the side glass, become stiff when cold, take a "set" when stowed for extended periods of time and become hard to erect and clamp down and in some cases leak. They can also split when cold if too much pressure is exerted when trying to lock the top down.  If you can see your way clear to get a canvas one, do so by all means.  Just my opinion.  I have canvas on both of my 8's.  IMHO they look better also.”  - Charles Frink

“Topsonline.com sells EZ-On tops. They fit correctly with the proper rain channels.  $279”

– Dave Elsberry

“Tops-on-line has done me well over the years. EzOn is what I have and it is better than Robbins IMHO. For the record, the single biggest bang for the buck upgrade you can do is put a canvas top on the car.  I have it and it makes the car look much classier.  It is easier to work with in colder weather.  Mine is 6 years old and still looks new.”

See: TR8CCA newsletter: issue 53 (pg 5) Odd Hedberg writes that Land Rover Discovery handles are generally black all over, whereas the wedge handles are silver with a black housing.   Wedge owners wanting to convert to keyless entry, could consider using the rear door handles from 4 door Range Rovers, which have no key locks.  See article for more details on  various part numbers and fitting instructions.

Also apparently used on the 1986 Vixon Class C motor home.

Comments:

The originals made by TEX were black, but the chrome versions can also be painted.    The following additional parts may be considered TR7/8 specific

1.       DZB5208 Mounting plate,

2.       YKC1779 Mounting plinth/base,

3.       ZKC1964 Fixing (reinforcing) plate inside the door

Later versions made by TEX look like they are replicas of the originals and do bolt up to the door.  However the mirror surface is placed further forward.  The result is the driver’s view of the passenger mirror may be obstructed by the quarter window frame, if the seat is pulled too far forward.

See TWOA newsletter: issue 14 (pg 8) for article on rebuilding the wedge mirrors and parts interchangeability with the new Tex units.

Comments:   Stock head rests can be rebuilt by any competent upholstery shop.  The later wedge head rests were wider, but both interchange in the seat retaining mechanism.   The head rests listed for other vehicles above fit the seat retaining mechanism, but may have different cushion dimensions:

Note:  To remove the head rest from a seat, grasp firmly and yank it up with some force.  This should over power the retaining mechanism and allow it to come free.

Comments:

The TR7/8 drivers and passengers window regulators are built from the same physical base component parts. They were made left and right handed during the final steps of manufacture, when the limit stop is cut and bent into opposing ends of the main gear. The main gear teeth wear out over time, but because only half the main gear is used to raise and lower the window, it is possible to modify a regulator to be used on the other side of the car.  If the small gear and its bearing are in good order, simply bend the limit stop flat with the rest of the gear.  Then cut and bend a new limit stop at the other end of the main gear.  Finally the return spring also needs to be flipped around to provide tension in the opposite direction.  The spring is tensioned as the window is wound down, so it can provide additional lift as the window is wound back up.

Comments:

The wipers on my FHC 8 were done and I have replaced (both of) them with Bosch 17inch part # 40717A.  These fit perfectly and the Bosch supplied pin fit the TR8 arms. I have not really tried but the pins in the dead Trico blades will not come out.
-  John Taylor Greenfield (November 2014)

“Last night I pleaded (on the list) for help with wedge wipers and got many replies. Here is what I know today.
The Trico Exact Fit units at my local store did NOT come with pins. I did NOT buy any. Same store had one 18” and one 16” ANCO and a few of the 4805 pins. They are now on the FHC and I now have a couple of new spare pins. Auto Zone had a Bosch wiper that should fit but NOT all had the correct fitting. Since I had a new set of Bosch wipers without the  correct fitting, which is what started this mess, they took what was needed from other packaging. Rockauto did have the Anco 16 and 18 inch blades for $3.12 and pins for .63. I bought 6 sets of blades and a dozen pins.
- John Taylor Green field (May 2015)

“I ordered new TRICO 18" and 16" wipers from Rock Auto.  They are nice, new and black, almost are dead-ringers for the original ones that were on the car, come with the pin installed, and set me back less than $20USD when the dust settled since they were on sale - and they were here in two days!
The part numbers are:
TRICO Part # 168      {#600168} Exact Fit; 16" (405mm) Pin Type Side Lock, Left Blade; DRIVER SIDE
TRICO Part # 188      {#600188} Exact Fit; 18" (455mm) Pin Type Side Lock, Right Blade; PASSENGER SIDE”
