Alternator
|
Application: TR8 1980-82 EFI/AC Triumph Part #: PRC1518 (Carb), DRC2567 (EFI) Other Part #’s: Lester 14054, Lucas 23868, Lucas A2502, Bosch AL2134X Other Vehicles: 77-79 Jaguar XJ12 and Jaguar XJS References: ebay
Comments: “I replaced my alternator a number of years ago with the following, and I might suggest going to your local parts store or website and requesting the Lester alternator No. 14054. Some parts stores might recognize the part number, 14054 on their systems without having to mention Lester. This is off the 77-79 Jaguar XJ12 and Jaguar XJS. I believe it is rated at 60 amps. This is a two wire alternator. There is no voltage sense wire connection. You will need to connect your large, brown battery wire and the small, thin brown and yellow wire to their respective posts. That's it. You can tape-off and isolate the thin, brown voltage sense wire which has the black plastic spade connector on its end. Here's a quick cross reference of part numbers for alternators from other manufacturers which are suppose to match up to the Lester No. 14054

Comments: TR8CCA newsletter, issue 77 (pg 4) details the installation on a TR8, but the TR7 is similar. Some installations may require clocking of the front cover to orient the mounting ears correctly.

Comments: It can be difficult to get a battery that fits correctly in the TR8 battery tray and to which the stock cables fit. In the USA, the NAPA Legend 75 #7534 seems to be one that does fit, as witnessed by the comment below.

Comments: “It's been a five month search for the big cat lights. I've contacted many for pricing -- was always more than I was willing to pay. Then it dawned on me "how stupid, you own a TR7 parts car and it's got 7 inch head lights." I don't know how many times I looked at the Triumph without the "Lights" going on. The light assembles are a fit. All I did is drill the four pop rivets out of the Triumph adapter and I had all but the chrome Jag rings in hand. Better yet the leads were the exact length required and the same color. I just pulled the new leads in with the old ones and plugged them in -- 2 hours max. Those of you who made the switch are absolutely correct the front end looks right now -- pictures don't do it justice.” - Lew Plummer

Application: TR7/8 Triumph Part #: UKC2409 (non-pushbutton speedo), AEU1811(push button speedo) Other Part #’s: Other Vehicles: References: Wedge e-mail list
Comments: “The wiring connectors in the harness behind the dash were probably revised through the years to move wires around to different spots and the printed circuit stayed the same until 1981. I went home and dug out the Parts Catalogs. It is in fact the "push-button" instrument panel dash that has a different printed circuit board. So, anyone wanting to change the printed circuit panel should be able to find that all from 1975-1980 model years will fit TR7 and TR8. The 1981 version (part # AEU1811) will directly work in 1981 models to end of production.” - David Huddleson

Comments: Three prong Oil Pressure switch: 3 terminal, long body, 1/8" pipe thread (NPT 1/8 – 27).
Napa Echlin (brand) OP6610 is a direct match for the three wire oil sender – TR8CCA newsletter, issue 83, (pg2). I went and bought the OP6610 oil pressure switch that everyone seems to recommend. Nice switch: 3 prongs, 1/8 NPT thread, long body, but it does not fit my car - not even close. My car by the way is a 1980 carb TR8 with a stock 3.5. I talked to Woody and he recommended (and sells) a Standard PS140 switch which has a shorter body, three prongs and a larger 1/4 NPT thread – which is an exact match for my failed switch.” - Brian Lanoway (June, 2015) “Some cars also have an adapter ( ERC1508 ) bushing to adapt a 1/4 NPT thread to a 1/8 NPT switch.” - Wayne Simpson (June, 2015)

Oil Pressure Switch - Boot (3 wire )
|
Application: TR8 1981(EFI) Triumph Part #: NSS Other Part #’s: Standard S956 Other Vehicles: References: WWWedge e-mail list
Comments: The factory molded connector is made of unobtainium. Repairs can be made using generic 1/4-inch female-blade terminals or a three-prong, weather-resistant, molded-on, 56-series connector assembly: GM 12101928 (AC-Delco PT200) has a black PVC connector-shell; slightly more expensive GM 12085529 (AC-Delco PT139) has a high-temp TPE shell.
Standard PN S956 (see picture at left) is also a usable substitute. “Got the 3-prong booted connector (STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # S956) today. I can confirm it fits the 3-prong oil pressure sensor on my car. It fits snugly over the sensor body so should provide some weather protection. A bit pricey but a solution nonetheless. I haven't spliced it in yet, but that's now on the list. It comes with three heat-shrink crimp splices, too.” - Benjamin Zwissler (June, 2015)

|
Application: TR8 1981(EFI) Triumph Part #: GPS117 (EFI) Other Part #’s: Unipart GPS117, AC Delco #EP31 Other Vehicles: Triumph TR6 References: TR8CCA newsletter, Internet forums
Comments: “I recently purchased Unipart GPS117 from ebay for my 3.5 EFI Rover V8. Came in a Unipart box labeled with the part number and also “09736 44/11/00 Made in England” The Invoice indicated a cross reference with Jaguar e-type, Triumph TR6, TR7, GT6, 2.5PI & Dolomite. It fits in the TR8 oil pump but requires the threaded adapter. It has a low cut-out pressure, because it sometimes turns the dash oil pressure light off while cranking the engine on the starter. ” – Mark Elbers (2013)
TR8CCA newsletter, issue 30 (pg 3) John Dombey mentions that the TR6 single wire oil pressure switch is a direct swap for the TR8 EFI.

Comments: Thread: 5/8 x 18 UNF “The quick and dirty check is to ground the wire from the sensor (on the engine) and see if you get a full hot reading. (If it doesn’t, you either have a bad gauge or a wiring problem) If you want to know if it is reasonably accurate you can use a selection of resistors. Here is what I have archived and it seems to be pretty close. TR8 temp sensor math You can also do this with the temperature indication. The OEM temperature sender on the TR8 has the following temperature / resistance formula where R is in ohms, Temp is in degrees Celsius, and e is the exponential function 2.71828... R = 5 + (4.4 * e^(-0.035 * (Temp - 172))) Substituting a variable pot in place of the sending unit should allow you to calibrate the indication on your gauge. Windshield Wiper –Grease
|
Application: TR7/8 Triumph Part #: N/A Other Part #’s: Other Vehicles: References: Various Web sites and forums. Google it and you’ll see.
Comments: The manual specifies three different lubricants when rebuilding or reassembling the Windshield wiper motor: Shell 41 oil, Molydbnum Disulphide & Ragosine Listate Grease. Unfortunately nobody in the world sells or knows where to get Ragosine Listate Grease. It's a product of a very old British refinery called the Ragosine Oil Company Ltd, now ROCOL. Rocol greases are now called Saphire and they don't list one as being a direct replacement.
Ragosine Listate was a Lithium based, extreme pressure grease for multipurpose automotive use with a high-melting point and high water resistant characteristics - same as Castrol LM or Shell Retinax A. The reason it's no longer available is it contained lead. Lucas would likely have started using a general purpose lithium grease as a replacement.
Other suggestions: “3-in-1” oil on the cable and White Lithium grease on the teflon gear.
“Rebuilt wiper motors I sold at NAPA usually had white lithium grease inside for the gears as it works well for both nylon and metal. It won't heat up and liquefy, nor does it attract moisture.”
