– John Sanders

“When I first had the TR8, I still had my 1991 Chevy Caprice Classic (305cid).  The air pump on it was a dead ringer (at least the body was) for the one for the TR8.  Whether it was actually a replacement, I don't know, but it sure looked the same.  As far as I know, the TR8 pump is Delco, so that would explain it. “
- John Boomer

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 77 (pg 6) mentions a 1977 Chevrolet Impala air pump as a good replacement with two possible part numbers. The Cardone Industries A1 32-112 is the best one listed as 10:00 lug not threaded, 4:00 lug threaded, but the 32-107 can be made to fit with it’s 10:00 lug threaded,  4:00 lug not threaded.  Just mix and match the correct bolts with or without nuts.

Comments:

This is a low pressure pump.  Do not confuse this with in-tank pumps, designed for modern high pressure EFI systems.

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 22 (pg 5) David Hultquist mentions that BorgWarner pump # P2 is a perfect fit.

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 51 (pg 14) Steve Chandler indicates that Borg Warner pump part # P2 is a perfect fit and puts out 4lb pressure.

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 69 (pg 12) Ben Zwissler mentions a number of replacement pumps.

TR8CCA newsletter, issue74 (pg 8) Dave Massey indicates that NAPA EP30 is a perfect fit.

If you just want to replace  the in tank pump (which is fine for most people) you can just use the airtex e3031”  -  TheWedgeShop - http://thebritishcar.com/showthread.php?488-fuel-pump  (Feb 2012)

Comments:
This is from an old discussion on K&N filters for the TR8s fitted with fuel injection...  Four part numbers have been mentioned:  RA-1063, RB-7296, RU-0960 and RU-3120.  The RA-1063 and the RB-7296 look rather similar, tapered with a chromed front end and sporting a K&N logo.  The RU-0960 is cylindrical with a larger 5.5 inch diameter.  The RU-3120 is also tapered but thinner and longer as compared to the RA-1063 and RB-7296.  It is also angled ~10 degrees making it possible to fit it much tighter along the expansion tank.  [That is mainly why I decided to use it...]  It lacks the chrome front end of the others - which is of negligible importance in a closed engine bay... BTW.  All of them are fitted directly (with hose clamp) onto the AirFlow Meter inlet flange.
- Odd Hedberg

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 37 (pg17), Jim Tencate describes (with pictures) his efforts to install a free flowing air filter on the front of his EFI TR8 Airflow meter.  Part number RU-0960 (bottom picture left) was installed (with hose clamp) and he also thought the tapered RU-3120 (top picture left) would fit as well.

Note: Four units are required to connect each intake manifold runner to the sheet metal intake plenum.

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 38, (pg 29) Joe Gorin describes a hardware store solution to replace a part that has been unavailable for many years.  Solution involves sourcing  2 X 90 degree rubber elbows for 1.5” plumbing.  You cut them to 45 degree sections and fasten to the intake and plenum using regular hose clamps.  Some people have reported that depending on the manufacturer and design, the hose clamps are not always necessary.

“From McMaster-Carr:  http://www.mcmaster.com : 55125K17, High-Temperature/Flexible Duct Hose for Fumes Neoprene Coated, 2" ID, 2-1/8" OD, Black, 3 feet did it.  And because slipping those hoses into the bracket isn't easy, I also got a section of:  8978K261, Rigid Aluminum Tubing 2" OD, 1.93" ID, .035" Wall Thickness, 1' Length.  I ordered 1 foot of that, cut it in half, and put on the end going into the bracket by the radiator. I wrapped the ends of the hose in black duct tape, to finish them a bit.”

Can use any pump that works with the EFI TR8 or from 4cyl Bosch EFI equipped vehicles of the 1970’s – 80’s.  Volkswagon (Bosch) pumps are easily found, inexpensive and a good match based on TR7 engine size.

“69414 is the generic Bosch fuel pump that supersedes all the others and works fine in the TR8 (and should also work fine in the TR7). $70 or so on Amazon.”

Standard Bosch 1 wire sensor.  May need to splice the stock electrical connector to the new replacement part.  Can also install a 3 wire heated sensor with the addition of 12v wiring harness ( relay to 12v switched by ignition switch “Run” position ) for the heating element.

I just got O2 sensors from Napa, they are NTK brand part #25572 and require the wires to be extended...  Fits 81 Tr8 fuel injection.

BOSCH 11051 is a direct fit with electrical connector already fitted,  BOSCH 11027 also fits,  but the old connector needs cto be reused.

Note on Rover V8 Sensor threads:

(Summarized from pg 185 of “How to tune a rover v8 for road and track” by Des hammill)

“Early narrow band “zirconia” 1 volt sensors used 14mm by 1.5mm pitch thread. (often referred to as Spark plug thread).....Later "titania" wide band TO17 5 volt lambda sensors used 12mm by 1.25mm pitch thread with shorter length of thread.”

Do you want Heated O2 sensors?

Will Parris covers the installation of heated O2 sensors on his blog  (http://www.tr-8.ca/?page_id=190).  Basically you need to add a relay to power the heating element when the engine is running.    “Part # at Napa (Canada) is a NGK 21003 and the weather-pack harness connector is a EC208 @ Napa also”.  Comments by Mike Mack  “I have a substitution for the NGK O2 Sensors that you used.  Denso 2343005. I just bought these from RockAuto.com for about $28. Each For my 1980 FI TR8”

TR8CCA newsletter, issue 33 (pg 19) Jim Tencate relates the trouble he had with a bad sensor (open circuit) and how, since the TR8 has no limp home mode,   he substituted a resistor to fake the ECU into thinking that a sensor was present.

Note: Jim later explained that he just compared the table of resistance values in the ROM at room temperature and 200 F (93 C) and a 1Kohm value seemed to work well under the circumstances at the time.  For reference the temperature/resistance table is as follows:

Celcius       /       Kilohms

-10              /          9.2

    0              /         5.9

  20              /         2.5

  40              /         1.18

1987-91 Range Rover (Classic), Cap is cosmetically different, but seal is identical to the TR7/8 small cap.

(Bottom Picture) 1997-84 Volkswagon Rabbit + Gti OEM Fuel Gas Cap,

“I received my 1979 VW Rabbit gas cap yesterday. It seems to fit just fine and will be cosmetically acceptable. Its flat topped, the spaces to get your fingers into seem a bit small if you are fat-fingered. The second set of flanges are tad bit large making removal a bit of a jiggle about, a little bit of filing probably solves it nicely. It sits a bit lower in the well than an original. But, it is unvented and seals quite well.”

– Jim Altman

“Hello Listers,  Someone on the list is looking for a gas cap that works.  The STANT company makes a chrome one that works and fits in the hole.  The part # is : STANT 11623”

- John Taylor

“I lost my gas cap last year.  I bought one that fits an '83 VW Rabbit 1.7. It’s a MOTORAD MGC808.  I paid $8.86 for it, but I just checked a popular online automotive website that starts with the word "Rock", and they have 5 of them for $4.28.  I should have waited!  The inner part fits perfectly onto the filler tube, but you need to use a grinder to grind down the outside diameter slightly so that it will fit down into the hole to reach the filler tube.  It's very easy to do if you have a grinder.”

Comments:

The Napa part (1047) is not perfect, but is workable.  It has a 2 inch ( 5cm ) inner diameter and a 90 degree bend (original has 100-105 degree bend) and is 2 inches (5 cm) too long, but can be shortened easily. I had to heat the hose with a hair dryer and use some silicone lubricant to allow it to slip on easily.

Comments:

I used the XJ6 filter on the pickup for my FI TR7.  It does fit but is not very snug so can be easily left behind in the tank if you need to pull the pickup in the future.  I used a flaring tool to put just the slightest flare on the end of the pickup, just enough that it takes a bit of a tug to get the screen off of the tube.

NOS Smiths TBS5232/000 fuel level sender for early TR7 4 speed cars. The factory part number is TKC147.

If the gauge is not reading correctly, ground the wire from the sensor (to the chassis) and see if you get a full tank gauge reading.  If it doesn’t you either have a bad gauge or wiring problem.

Comments:

The stock plastic float will eventually crack or puncture and fill with fuel, which allows it to sink giving a false fuel level reading.

Float can be replaced with Ford part # COAZ-9202-B (Mustang 1964-1973?) made from brass. (pictured)

“Plastic = Jaguar part number JLM772,  Brass = Mustang 1964-1973 (Ford part number COAZ-9202-B ?) = Moss California part number 360-646”

- Odd Hedberg

“ I bought mine (Brass) from Macs  (http://macsautoparts.com) “

– Gary Klein

“The plastic float for the fuel sender frequently fills with fuel and sinks, causing the gauge to read low or empty. Fuel containing ethanol seems particularly prone to this. Rather than replace the entire sender, consider replacing only the float with a brass float from a Ford Mustang, part number 24007502 available from Mustangs Unlimited or from Moss Motors US. It is fuel proof and simply snaps in to replace the original plastic float.”

Exact same part number is used in a lot of British Leyland vehicles from 1960’s -90’s.

One wedge owner used a similar part from a 1980’s GM vehicle, which suggests that the GM locking ring assembly   (TR7/8 - ARA1501) might also be used to repair a TR7/8 tank or convert a TR7 carb tank to dual port EFI specification.
