Distributor - Conversion
|
Application: TR8 Triumph Part #: N/A Other Part #’s: Other Vehicles: References: ebay
Comments: Conversions: 1. Large cap HEI from 1974.5-1976 5.7L (350ci) Buick V8, (A-1 part# 30-1896). Swap on the Rover distributor gear and oil pump drive. Front intake bolt on the left side may need to be trimmed a little to fit. Later Buick V6’s that used the same large cap HEI distributor used a button style allen head bolt for more clearance. It also fits the TR8 engine. 2. An older “small cap” points style distributor from the same Buick engine also works and can be upgraded to electronic ignition by installing a Crane or Pertronix kit. Distributor gear also needs to be converted as above. No manifold clearance issues exist with this unit.
TR8CCA newsletter, issue 63 (pg5 ) goes into detail on installing a non-HEI Buick 350 distributor, albeit without vaccum advance. Distributor: NAPA 48-1813, Rotor: NAPA RR169R, Cap: NAPA RR165.

Distributor – (Delco) - Ignition Amplifier
|
Application: TR7 1980-81 Triumph Part #: PKC478 or AUE1676 Other Part #’s: Delco D1906 (stock type module and very reliable), NAPA ECH TP45 (probably same manufacturer as the D1906), Pertronix D2000 (street: about 5.5 amp current limit), Pertronix D2070 (Race: 7.2 amp current limit) Other Vehicles: References: ebay, Tony Rhodes
Comments: Any GM 4cyl HEI module of the same year should be identical in shape and will work. The dwell settings may not be perfect for the TR7, but today (30yrs later) all the readily available replacement modules are generic designs and no longer vehicle specific.
Excessive heat is the major cause of failure for these HEI ignition modules. Since it is over 30 years since most of these modules left the factory, it is wise to remove the module from the coil housing and reinstall with a fresh layer of heat sink paste, which can be sourced from electronics stores, who stock it for use with computer CPU heat sinks.

Distributor – (Delco) – Variable Reluctor Pickup
|
Application: TR7 1980-81 Triumph Part #: NSS Other Part #’s: Wells DR-102, NAPA MP102, Delco D1910, LX311(the star ring is very close match (or perfect), the pickup coil wires are correct). Wells DR-107, NAPA MP107, Delco D1966, LX310 (star-ring stator is a perfect match. The pickup coil wires are reversed). Other Vehicles: References: WWWedge e-mail list
Comments: “No exact replacement: reuse original back shell. The permanent magnet is correct on both the DR-107 and DR-103. (Probably any pickup module magnet with a similar size/shape will work regardless of the configuration of the star-ring stator). You will probably need to cut off the small indexing tab on the pickup coil to be able to orientate it properly in the shell (the original coil had no tab). The pickup coil Green wire always goes to the “G” terminal.” - Tony Rhodes

Ignition Coil – (Delco)
|
Application: TR7 1980-81 Triumph Part #: Other Part #’s: Peugeot-type: Original Engine Management #5048 (reuses original wiring harness) Delco D525 (NAPA MPE IC22SB) (needs new wires to module and car) Other Vehicles: GM & Peugeot References: WWWedge e-mail list, ebay, NAPA
Comments: “There are a number of ignition options for the TR7. It appears that the very best is the Delco HEI distributor with the Delco D525 coil or the “Peugeot” coil. The Lucas CEI appears to have a better spark energy overall than the original HEI system supplied by Triumph, but not as good as an improved HEI system.” - Tony Rhodes
“The Ford Thick Film Ignition (TFI) coil from a 1993-94 F150/250 series truck bolts into the TR7 AC Delco coil frame with the addition of ¼” spacers, longer screws and minor wiring adjustments. Provided with 12V directly from a convenient source (i.e. battery or starter solenoid) via a relay switched by the original power input wire, the spark is much improved. When sourced from the wrecking yard, this is literally a $20 upgrade” - Mark Elbers
